FPC Washington, D.C. Spring Fly-In

The Florida Ports Council held a Fly-In with their cruise industry partners in Washington D.C. on March 12 and 13. Port and cruise representatives met with members of Florida’s congressional delegation, and other House and Senate leadership representatives. The group also provided testimony on March 12 to the Florida Congressional Port Caucus chaired by Congresswoman Wilson, Congressman Posey, Congresswoman Frankel, and Congressman Diaz-Balart. The meeting was well attended by Florida delegation members serving on appropriation, transportation, and agriculture committees. Representatives from the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, and U.S. Department of Agriculture provided the Caucus members and all attendees with updates on their respective issues.

Florida’s Atlantic Coast ports boosting infrastructure to handle cargo growth

Already handling record cargo volumes, ports along the Atlantic Coast of Florida are making extensive investments, including in deeper channels and larger cranes, to support efficient movement of even more business.

In addition to enhancements to capabilities for handling bigger cruise ships at several ports – led by PortMiami as the longtime Cruise Capital of the World and Port Everglades and Port Canaveral – Florida Atlantic seaports have been bringing online billions of dollars worth of leading-edge infrastructure to accommodate increasingly large containerships, including those transiting the expanded Panama Canal.

Florida Gulf Coast ports benefit from diverse range of activities

Continuing a tradition of supporting a broad spectrum of functions, ports along the Gulf Coast of Florida are reaping benefits of increasing cargo activity in containerized, breakbulk and bulk sectors while serving as home base for such unusual activities as training of sailing crews and future landings of reusable space rockets.

Although the Sunshine State’s Central Panhandle suffered substantial damage as a result of last October’s Hurricane Michael, most of the region was fortunate to have not been significantly impacted by the third-most-intense Atlantic hurricane to ever make U.S. landfall.

Welcome to the NEW Port of Fernandina….

The Port of Fernandina is Florida’s northernmost port and shares a channel with Georgia. The Port experienced a renaissance in 2018 that continues with the advent of a new terminal operator, Worldwide Terminals Fernandina, LLC, which signed a 35-year agreement with the Ocean Highway and Port Authority last October. Other recent additions include a Liebherr LHM400 mobile harbor crane and three new service lines with G2 Ocean, Spliethoff and SDW Shipping BV service, which connect Sweden and Spain to the West Coast of South America through Fernandina ...
