8th Annual Keep Port Everglades Shipshape

Location: Midport Parking Garage

BROWARD COUNTY, FL— Volunteer artists of all levels and ages are invited to the 8th Annual Keep Port Everglades Shipshape painting party on Saturday, May 19, from 9:30 AM to 1:30 PM, to celebrate National Maritime Day.

The Keep Port Everglades Shipshape event provides community participants the opportunity to test their creativity by painting recycled petroleum drums that will be used as decorative trash and recycling bins throughout the Port.

All participants must register with Hands On Broward, (handsonbroward.org), an organization that partners with more than 600 nonprofit local agencies to provide residents with a wide range of volunteer opportunities. Students can fulfill community service hours with this event.

Participants over the age of 18 must present government-issued photo identification, such as a driver’s license or passport, at the Port security checkpoint. They are encouraged to enter the Port through the I-595/Eller Drive security checkpoint due to anticipated traffic at the Convention Center. Check-in will be from 9:30 to 10 AM. This year’s event will take place on the ground floor of the Midport Parking Garage. Free parking will be located next to Cruise Terminal 19. Please wear comfortable clothing that can become stained by paint. Refreshments and port tours will be provided. All participants will receive a commemorative t-shirt for participating.

Awards will be given for the most creative drums in three age categories. This year, an extra award will also be given for creative drum designs celebrating the Port’s 90th anniversary for those who would like to use that as an art theme.

Basic paint and supplies will be provided; however, participants may bring their own non-oil based paints (latex, acrylic) and brushes if desired for a tailored design. During the awards ceremony, participants will learn about the economic impact Port Everglades has in the community and the important contributions that mariners make in international trade and cruise travel.

Keep Port Everglades Shipshape is a Port-wide campaign held to encourage recycling and cleanliness at the world’s third busiest cruise port and Florida’s top containerized cargo port. The event recognizes National Maritime Day, which is a national celebration to honor and recognize the maritime industry and its benefits to our country.
