Florida prepares for peak hurricane season

As meteorologists try earnestly to predict where, how often and how intensely tropical depressions, storms and hurricanes will strike, seaports know more than anyone to prepare for the worst while hoping for the best. Although the 2019 hurricane season has been tame thus far, the peak of the season is from August to October, so the transportation and business community must stay vigilant in preparation for hurricanes and natural disasters.

Some hurricane preparedness tips to secure your business before a disaster and during recovery include:

  • Designate important contacts to save that are crucial to business operations, such as employees and their emergency contacts, regional partners, clients/forwarders that may be affected by disrupted businesses practices, banks, lawyers, accountants.
  • Back-up documents that are not easily produced such as insurance documents, legal contracts, tax returns, and accounting statements to avoid water damage.
  • Create paper copies & seal these documents in waterproof containers onsite.
  • Save additional copies of all your designated contacts and documents in an alternate, accessible off-site location.
