Today, the Cruise Line International Association (CLIA) announced that its cruise line members have agreed to an additional voluntary suspension of U.S. cruising until October 31st. Florida’s seaports support the resumption of cruising once all appropriate safeguards are in place to protect cruise employees and guests.
However, these important safety measures also come at a cost to our ports. Yesterday, we released a new analysis that estimates the pandemic will result in the loss of 169,000 jobs and have an economic impact of nearly $23 billion on the state of Florida through 2020. It is more critical than ever that Congress provide substantial relief to the maritime transportation system to protect maritime jobs and ensure the flow of food, medicine, and other supplies critically needed at this time.
