Port Everglades and its marine terminal partner Florida International Terminal, LLC, (FIT) today welcomed ocean-shipping giant CMA CGM to Broward County with the start of the FLAMINGO EXPRESS weekly service to and from the U.S. Virgin Islands, the Bahamas and the Caribbean with links to Asia and Europe.

“This is the start of an advantageous partnership between Port Everglades and one of the largest cargo shipping companies in the world,” said Port Everglades Chief Executive and Port Director Jonathan Daniels, who was on hand to welcome Captain Olexandr Barbalat, master of CMA CGM’s Janina for the first call of the FLAMINGO EXPRESS.

The FLAMINGO EXPRESS offers weekly service between Fort Lauderdale, the U.S. Virgin Islands, the Bahamas, St. Martin and Haiti aboard the CMA CGM owned and operated vessels Regula and Janina. Cargo will be transshipped globally through Kingston, Jamaica.

“We echo Jonathan Daniels’ sentiments in welcoming CMA CGM’s Flamingo Express service to Port Everglades. We are honored to be able to have this new vessel service call our terminal operation here at FIT,” said Justin P. Weir, President & General Manager of Florida International Terminal, LLC, the marine terminal cargo handler for CMA CGM.

CMA CGM S.A. is a French container transportation and shipping company with a presence in 160 countries through 755 agencies, 750 warehouses, 110,000 employees and a wide fleet of 502 vessels.  CMA CGM serves 420 of the world’s 521 commercial ports and operates 285 shipping lines.

Florida International Terminal, LLC (FIT) is a world-class port operator that was founded in 2004 through the association of two large Latin American Port Operators, SAAM and AGUNSA. FIT operates a Marine Terminal of 46.6 acres in the Southport area of Port Everglades.

A global powerhouse for international trade, Port Everglades handles an average of one-million TEUs annually (20-foot equivalent units, the industry standard measurement for container volumes) and serves as a gateway to Latin America, the Caribbean, Europe and Asia. Located within the Florida cities of Fort Lauderdale, Hollywood, and Dania Beach, Port Everglades is in the heart of one of the world’s largest consumer regions, including a constant flow of approximately 112 million visitors statewide and 6 million residents within an 80-mile radius. Port Everglades has direct access to the interstate highway system and the Florida East Coast Railway’s 43-acre intermodal container transfer facility, and is closer to the Atlantic Shipping Lanes than any other Southeastern U.S. port. Ongoing capital improvements and expansion totaling $3 billion within the next 20 years ensure that Port Everglades continues to handle future growth in container traffic.
