New ‘Smart Pond’ Technology Arrives at Port Tampa Bay

Port Tampa Bay is playing a leading role in easing the supply chain crisis, and now, they can ensure 100 percent of its available land can be used to meet the unprecedented expansion of containerized cargo now calling on the Port.

Port Tampa Bay was able to save $1.12 million by partnering with National Stormwater Trust in converting an existing FDOT stormwater pond into a Smart Pond.

By leveraging real-time weather forecasting and automated controls by OptiRTC, the water level in this innovative stormwater pond is actively managed to maximize its water quality treatment and flood protection performance.

This Port Tampa Bay partnership further helps ensure homes, businesses and the waters of Tampa Bay will benefit. In fact, the Smart Pond has an 84 percent increase in flood attenuation volume, and a 44 percent increase in nitrogen removal.
