BROWARD COUNTY, FLPort Everglades reached a record high in containerized cargo this past fiscal year with 1,108,465 TEUs (20-foot equivalent units, the industry’s standard container measurement) moving through the Port. Though the numbers are preliminary, this is a 3 percent year-over-year increase and the fifth year that Port Everglades exceeded one-million TEUs. (Note: fiscal years run from October 1 through September 30.)

“We’ve enjoyed a robust growth period and are moving forward with significant investments to maximize the use of our land, cranes and berth space,” said Port Everglades Chief Executive & Port Director Steve Cernak.

Port officials attribute the growth to Florida’s increasing consumer population and shipping activity from Northern Europe.

In addition to containerized cargo, the Port experienced a 2 percent increase in bulk and breakbulk cargo tonnage, which are mostly cement, steel rebar and other building materials.

Port Everglades is the nation’s leading gateway for trade with Latin America, handling approximately 15 percent of all Latin American trade in the U.S. and 37 percent of Florida’s total trade in the region. Much of that trade is in the perishables market, where Port Everglades is Florida’s leading refrigerated cargo seaport, and fifth in the U.S.

In the next five years, Port Everglades is investing nearly $1 billion in infrastructure improvements to increase cargo volumes. Expansion projected include adding new cargo berths, installing new Super Post-Panamax container gantry cranes, increasing the lift capacity on existing cranes, and deepening and widening the Port’s navigation channels.
