President’s Message: February 2025

Mike Rubin
President & CEO

Members of the Florida House of Representatives Economic Infrastructure Subcommittee had an opportunity to take a deep dive into how seaports play an instrumental role in keeping Florida’s economy strong earlier today. Port leaders from PortMiami, JAXPORT and Port Tampa Bay addressed lawmakers in a two-hour presentation at the request of Subcommittee Chair Representative Chip LaMarca.

Feeding, fueling and healing Floridians is a top priority for Florida’s ports, and it was a pleasure to provide lawmakers an overview of our recent Critical Commodities Report which shows that Florida’s maritime activity represents a strong 12.2 percent of the state’s $1.6 trillion GDP.

As Florida’s population continues growing, robust investments in seaport infrastructure is essential for maintaining a strong supply chain. Modern ports, combined with our efficient operations, enables smooth cargo movement, while also minimizing delays and disruptions in the delivery of goods supporting Florida’s economic stability.

Special thanks to the port leaders that joined me in testifying before the committee, including Hydi Webb, PortMiami Port Director, Raul Alfonso, Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer, Port Tampa Bay, Nick Primrose, Chief, Regulatory Compliance, JAXPORT. A presentation on Port Panama City was also provided.

At the beginning of March, port leaders will participate in TPM25 – the largest maritime trade convention that allows Florida’s ports to connect with the cargo industry and secure additional trade through Florida. This is an important time for our industry as we position our competitive seaports and recruit more cargo shipping lines to change lanes and call on a Florida port.

TPM25 will be followed in late March by the Florida Ports Council and Florida Seaport Transportation and Economic Development Board of Directors meetings. Be sure to include these dates on your calendar and make plans to join port leaders in Tallahassee for these important meetings.

With February nearly over, I’d like to take a moment to thank everyone who took part in February’s American Heart Month. Thank you for joining us in raising awareness about a good cause – heart disease.

As always, thank you for everything you do to help keep Florida’s ports strong.
