Update from Port Panama City regarding Hurricane Michael
Update for October 17, 2018 – All of the employees of the Panama City Port Authority are safe and most have been able to return to work. Many of them are not able to remain in their homes. We have had a number of Ports reach out to us and offer assistance. We are very appreciative of the support and will be working with our employees to better understand how to help with their immediate needs and medium term needs.
We have made great progress getting general cargo facilities back in operation and will resume Terminal services on Monday. The Channel has been repaired and we received our first vessel call today. The Port’s Industrial tenants have all mobilized restoration teams and are working to get their employees back to work as soon as possible. The roads are being cleared at an impressive pace. The Bay Line has righted the overturned cars and has cleared the hundreds of downed trees from their tracks.
We are grateful for the fantastic job local, State, and Federal officials are doing to help the affected region. The response of Gulf Power and the other utility companies has been remarkable.
The Panama City Port Authority is committed to supporting the needs of our tenants and shippers and doubly committed to assisting the region with a fast and full recovery.
October 15, 2018 – The Panama City Port Authority has not yet been in contact with all of its employees, but most have been contacted and are safe. Most employees have sustained some damage to their homes, and some have lost their homes.
Power was restored to the port on Saturday and internet service should be up by Tuesday.
The port sustained damage to many of the buildings, but no damage to its docks, cranes, and equipment. The port expects to offer limited terminal service for general cargo by the end of the week.
Panama City’s residents and businesses have suffered a catastrophic blow. The Panama City Port Authority is determined to do its part to demonstrate the resilience of the community and the affected area with a quick and full recovery.
